How To Grow Facebook Fans Organically
By Julia Tsai, Associate Editor, Internet Journal

In my previous article, I discussed the difference between search exposure/traffic and social exposure/likes. The key to grow search traffic/exposure is to get your Web page ranking for certain keywords high. The key to grow social like/exposure is to improve the reach and get the post to show up in people's news feed once they liked it.

Here are some of the tips on how to grow Facebook fans organically. Some of the ideas are taken from this year's SMX presentations given by Dan Robbins, Tami Dalley, and Aaron Friedman.

    1. Develop quality audience through organic growth

    2. However, don't be afraid to use Facebook ads to grow the fan base

    3. Be passionate about what you post and make quality content

  • Type of contents to post
    • o Photo galleries and videos: raw and polished footage

o Links: Website contents, product reviews, event coverage, videos

      o Contests and special offers

      o Market research

      o Fan calls-to-action

  • Handling user posted contents:
    • o Answer every question in a timely manner

      o Ignore antagonists

o Remove only pure spam and hate posts

o Leave question directed at the community for the community

      o Check hidden post daily

  • Facebook publishing philosophies
    • o Post only quality, relevant contents

      o Once posted, forever posted

o Time is not the essence, reliability is

  • Three reasons for the social break-up
    • o Too many posts

      o Too much marketing

      o Repetitive or boring contents

  • Top 3 KPIs (Key Performance Indicators)
    • o Weekly "like" growth

o Likes, comments, shares, and clicks

      o User posts

Tips for driving likes and comments:

  • Keep posts short, especially for photos (less than 80 characters), events, and videos (less than 40 characters)
  • Post Thursday and Fridays (18% higher engagement than other days of the week)
  • Photo and plain status posts work well
  • Clear call to action (use: like, post, take, comment, submit; don't use: order, see, become a fan, shop)
  • Sell softly. Softer sell promotional keywords resonate better. More direct/aggressive language don't work as well
  • Place questions at the end of a post
  • Ask a question as well (use where, when, would and should; avoid asking why questions.)
  • Use fill-in-the-blank posts
  • (9 times higher comment rate, mine data for fan insights)
  • Be topical and relevant

Tips for driving Share

  • Understand it's a bigger ask
  • So do ASK
  • Post visual content

Tips for driving shares outside Facebook

  • Support social sharing (embedding sharing buttons to drive referral traffic, sales and conversions)
  • Viral sharing
